I love popcorn. I grew up eating a bowl almost every night. In fact, my husband never ceases to be amazed at how frequently I can eat popcorn without getting tired of it. So when I found a way to buy popcorn on the cheap, I jumped at it. Last year, I purchased a 50lb. bag of popcorn at Sam's club for $12.50. I also purchased a box of popcorn salt for about $3.50. You just don't get a snack cheaper than that, unless it's free! Here are answers to a few thoughts you might be having about now: Is she crazy? Unequivocally, yes. How do you store 50lbs. of popcorn? In popcorn tins of course! I picked up a few of those big, decorative popcorn tins at Goodwill, washed them out and filled them up. (This works well for shorter term wheat and rice storage). I keep a small container in the house and the large containers in the garage. How long will the popcorn last? Based on the Google searching I did before I made this purchase, about 18 mos. After that, the popping performance will decrease, but it doesn't go bad. What else can you do with that much popcorn? If you have a grain mill, you can grind it and use it for cornmeal. You can also find lots of recipes online that use popcorn. It was this yummy recipe, at YourHomeBasedMom, that prompted me to write this post. Be sure you scroll all the way down to see her beautiful packaging of this treat. I think it would look great in a canning jar added to a gift basket. You could string it for Christmas decorating. I've heard of using it (air popped) for packing material (sounds messy). Above all else, you could share it with friends. If each of you paid for a 1/4 of a bag, you could get a year's supply of popcorn and not have to worry about storage.
