Yesterday, the kids and I ran into Barnes & Noble. I was reminded of a great trick I use. I love to browse the bookstore and make a list for the library. After all, the store and the publishers do everything that they can to make the books look attractive. I had to laugh when I saw a copy of "Treasure Island" that had been re-packaged to look like an Alex Ryder novel (contemporary series about a teen spy). Books that my kids would overlook at the library, become high priority at the bookstore.
Another great way to find books to put on your library list is Amazon. When my kids read a book that they really enjoy, we look the book up on Amazon. We use the Listmania lists to help us find other books that they might enjoy (I don't give my kids free reign on this one, I usually work with them).
I love books, but purchasing too many takes up space (expensive), shelving (expensive), and if you move a lot—weight (expensive to move). Utilizing the library, on the other hand, is cheap (as long as you keep up with due dates). In addition, supporting the library makes sure that everyone in the community can have access to books, not just those who can afford them.

How much is enough? Have you asked yourself this question lately? It’s one I’ve often asked myself and one that came to mind again today. I was reading internet news coverage of Michael Jackson’s death and I read this startling fact—when he died, Jackson was four hundred million dollars in debt! Imagine the wealth he amassed in his lifetime, and look at where he ended up!
He was clearly trying to buy something that can’t be purchased with money. When you do that, you are bound to end up in debt. After all, peace, contentment, joy, love…these are all things that even the richest people can’t afford. If that’s what you are using your credit card for, give up now.
I hope you will take a minute today to step back and give honest answers to these questions:
How much is enough? (Be specific. Do you need a house? How big? A car? What kind? What will ultimately meet your true needs? Are you already there? Are you content?) If you can’t answer this question with specifics, you will always want more.
Are you trying to buy what can’t be bought? I went through a season when I tried to buy health for my family by the foods that I purchased. Yes, we need to make responsible choices, but guess what? The health of my family is not ultimately mine to give!
Maybe that’s not your issue, but I can pretty much guarantee that all of us are tempted to try and buy something that can’t be purchased: the love of our children, the envy of our friends, a peaceful night of sleep, safety and security.
The bottom line is that I want to have a life full of joy
and contentment, and I want that for you as well. But, as long as we try to buy for ourselves
what only God can provide, we will be broke!
