This week our box contained:
A Bunch of Red Russian Kale
A Bunch of Curly Kale (not the true name)
Radishes
Sweet Potatoes
Onions
A Pint of Strawberries
So what did we do with it all?
Kale: I used ½ the kale in a pasta recipe that I was not crazy about. Not bad, just not a repeater. The other half, we will sauté and eat as a side dish. This is our favorite way to eat kale.
Radishes: This is one of the few CSA foods we just don't eat, so I passed them on to a neighbor.
Sweet Potatoes: Almost everyone in my family loves sweet potatoes. I simply baked them (in the crockpot to cut back on cooking energy as well as air conditioning) and served them as the main course with some Kale, fresh salad, and watermelon. We eat a very protein heavy breakfast on Sunday mornings, so I don't think twice about this lower protein dinner.
Onions: I will chop and freeze these for later use.
Strawberries: We've just been snacking on these a few at a time. They are so much better than store bought berries! I suspect that this particular variety could not withstand the rigors of cross-country shipping. Getting to try new varieties of old favorites is one of the best parts of local food.
